Short Description
BastionGuard is an open-source security platform for Linux desktops, built around deterministic behaviour, explicit policies, and visible security decisions. The suite combines endpoint protection, backup, secure connectivity, recovery tools, and a web interface. Its source code, documentation, licensing terms, and development history are publicly available for independent review.
Extended Description
BastionGuard is an open-source Linux security platform designed for users and administrators who prefer explicit controls, inspectable policies, and visible decisions over opaque protection models. It brings several defensive functions into one suite, including endpoint monitoring, ransomware-oriented safeguards, backup capabilities, secure connections, recovery tools, and a web-based management interface.
The project is developed publicly, and its source code is available through the official Git service. Technical documentation, licensing terms, security guidance, release-verification instructions, and trademark information are also published through official BastionGuard channels. Releases are distributed under the GNU General Public License version 3, while the BastionGuard name and branding remain separately protected.
BastionGuard is intended to support transparent and auditable Linux security workflows. Its design emphasizes local control, deterministic behaviour, reviewable configuration, and clear operational boundaries. The project does not claim to provide absolute protection, and its documentation should be consulted to understand supported environments, deployment requirements, and known limitations.
Editors, reviewers, researchers, and open-source contributors are invited to examine the software, reproduce documented procedures, review the architecture, and provide independent technical feedback.
Main Components
BastionGuard Endpoint
Endpoint security and monitoring for Linux systems, based on transparent policies, inspectable controls, and visible security decisions.
BastionGuard Backup
Backup and snapshot capabilities intended to support data protection, operational continuity, and recovery workflows.
BastionGuard Secure Connection
Network-security functionality for managing protected connections and explicit connectivity policies.
BastionGuard Recovery Data
Recovery-oriented tools intended to help users restore data and respond to operational incidents.
BastionGuard WebUI
A browser-based interface for viewing information and interacting with supported BastionGuard components.
Key Characteristics
- Open-source development and publicly reviewable source code.
- Designed specifically for Linux environments.
- Explicit and inspectable security policies.
- Visible security decisions rather than opaque automated behaviour.
- Local-first operational model for supported functions.
- Integrated endpoint, backup, connectivity, and recovery capabilities.
- Public technical documentation and security guidance.
- Release-verification instructions.
- Source code distributed under the GNU GPL version 3.
- Separate trademark protection for the BastionGuard name and visual identity.
How BastionGuard Differs
BastionGuard is designed around transparency and explicit control. Rather than presenting security as an invisible service whose decisions cannot be inspected, the project aims to make policies, configuration, and operational behaviour visible to the user.
The project combines several Linux security and resilience functions within one suite while keeping its source code and technical documentation publicly accessible.
BastionGuard should not be described as providing complete or absolute protection. Its effectiveness depends on configuration, deployment conditions, supported environments, and the specific threat being considered.
Journalists and reviewers are encouraged to evaluate these claims independently by examining the source code, documentation, packages, and reproducible test scenarios.
